Can Cock Rings Be Risky? Guide To Choosing A Safe Cockring.

July 4, 2012 by George Forgan-Smith 2 Comments

Hey there Guys,

After yesterday’s post about erectile dysfunction I received a couple of questions about whether there was any risk in using cock rings. Today I thought it was a good chance to discuss their use, potential risks and how to choose a cockring that is safe.

Cock rings are quite commonly used in the gay community. While some guys use them to “make everything look bigger” by far the most common use is to help maintain erections. Cock rings sit at the base of the penis and scroutum where they help reduce the blood flow out of the penis.

The penis is basically a hydraulic system. With erections blood flows into three chambers. As the chambers fill the penis becomes erect. A snug cock ring helps reduce the blood flowing out of these chambers, keeping the penis erect longer.

Used short term cock rings are perfectly safe. The main problems arise when worn for long periods of time, or if they are too tight and are not able to be removed. For this reason I recommend the following guidelines:

Healthy Cock Ring Use

  • Avoid metal cock rings: In an emergency getting a metal cock ring off fast can be a difficult process.
For this reason I highly recommend the magnetic cock ring  or stretchy silicone cock rings shown in the video.

Avoid the pain and risk of needing a ring cut off at an emergency department by wearing snap on leather straps or rings made of rubber that can be cut with scissors.

  • Avoid wearing cock rings for more than 40 minutes: The tissue of the penis and testicles needs fresh blood to stay alive. If you notice any pain, numbness or if the flesh goes pale or blue remove the cock ring straight away.
  • Avoid heavy weighted cock rings: A heavy cock ring can pull on the delicate structures near the base of the penis. This can lead to nerve damage and worsening of hernias in the groin.
  • If your cock ring is stuck seek help immediately: Prolonged erections can be a medical emergency. If you are not able to get your cock ring off even after trying cool showers or ice, head to the emergency department straight away. Embarrassing as it may be it’s an emergency. Get help fast.

Guys I hope you find these cock ring tips helpful. Enjoy by all means but look after yourself and your penis.

Yours in great health.

Dr George

Hello, is it safe to wear a chastity cage (cock ring + penis cover) while doing squats? I have worn them and one of the testicle popped out of the cage while squatting. Will it lead to hernia?

With squatting there is a risk that the cock ring could pull down on the tube that connects to the testicles. Yes you are correct, it would lead to a hernia. Please be careful! Dr George
