Boy Scouts of America will be voting on may 22nd to allow young gay scouts to participate while still maintaining a ban blocking gay men as leaders.
Feels to me like the erroneous perpetuated belief that gay men and women corrupt children.
While I am pleased that young gay men will still be able to find friendship, fun and learn life skills via scouting, I’m sad that these same gay men will not be able to share their passion when they are adults.
The Boy Scouts of America on Friday proposed ending its long-standing ban on gay youth while continuing to bar gay adults from staff or volunteer leadership roles, a compromise move that angered some on both sides of the contentious debate.
The proposal, which follows a three-month review of the youth organization’s membership policies, sets up a battle for May 22, when some 1,400 Scout leaders at an annual meeting will vote on the recommendation.
“America needs Scouting, and our policies must be based on what is in the best interest of our nation’s children,” a Scouts spokesman said in a statement. “While perspectives and opinions vary significantly, parents, adults in the Scouting community, and teens alike tend to agree that youth should not be denied the benefits of Scouting.”
I have been always been a proud gay scout. My years of scouting added so much fun to my life.
While this resolution is not the ideal final outcome, it is certainly a great start.
