Hey there Guys. Do you use a condom for oral sex?
Sorry to be so straight forward but hey, it’s always best to get the questions out and open yes?
The reason I ask is that I received an email from a good friend who had visited his GP. He was organising his regular sexual health screening and was asked by the doctor if he chose to use a condom for oral sex. After he said that no, he didn’t use condoms for oral the doctor made a glib remark of “oh, so you use condoms for anal but not oral?”
Sadly this comment left my friend feeling looked down upon and feeling bad.
Currently in Australia the guidelines are that the risk of contracting HIV from oral sex is almost nil if there are no cuts or sores in the mouth, any sort of infection and with no ejaculation into the mouth.
If you do have a sore throat, recent dental work or cuts in your mouth it’s probably best to avoid oral while you are healing. Let’s face it there are plenty of other fun activities you can enjoy.
Other infections like chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis can be transmitted via oral which is why we do throat swabs as part of a sexual health check up.
So I wanted to ask, what are your thoughts about oral, in particular do you use a condom for oral sex? It would be great to hear your thoughts.
Yours in good health.
Dr George
